Agrupamento de Escolas de Castro Daire is situated in the central part of Portugal. It is a public school in a rural area which means that the major part of the students' families live from agriculture in the surrounding villages or in the town. Others work abroad and that’s why a significant percentage of our students stay with a relative. The age of our 1447 pupils vary from 3 to 19 according to the different levels of study. Presently 199 teachers teach from Kindergarden up to secondary education in buildings scattered around the municipality. Besides general education, the school also offers vocational courses, which change regularly according to the needs of the job market. Due to the fact that a lot of tourists travel to Portugal every year and skilled workers are required in areas linked to tourism , our school tends to fill that need by providing professional courses related to fields such as catering, massage or ICT for pupils who just want to complete compulsory education. As a matter of fact, the school management would like to develop other training courses to teach the pupils job skills to prepare them so that one day they could become electricians, carpenters or mechanics and tries to buy specific equipment to put that into practice. However, the tight budgets hinder and as a result restrict pupils' choices. Consequently, at the end of the 9th grade many pupils decide to leave their hometown in order to pursue another path. As far as regular education is concerned, at the beginning of the 10th form pupils are required to choose what they would like to study during secondary education which lasts three years. The most chosen courses at that level have to do with science and technology but also humanities, languages, literature and economics. Our school has been very active in former Comenius, Erasmus+ and etwinning projects, because we recognize the importance of such projects for both teachers and students.
